WARREN

I rushed to my feet and sprinted to the phone on the end table. Rain was close at my tail. Ezra and Graham weren’t far behind either.

“Hello, this is Warren,” I answered.

“You were looking for Nancy, weren’t you?” a man’s voice, one I didn’t recognize immediately.

“I am,” I said. “Who’s this?”

“Right. Sorry. Eric Ainsworth.” A Witch, a member of the Chambers, and a raging fucking asshole. “She came here asking for help, so I’ve got her. What do you need to know?”

“I’d rather ask the questions myself.”

He snorted a laugh. “I’m not gonna let you kill an old woman, Warren.”

Oh, but you’ll hold her hostage and torture her yourself? “I’m not gonna kill her. I just need to ask her some questions.”

Rain shimmied closer against me, struggling to get her ear to the speaker.

“What about?”

“She made a dirty deal with a Demon ten years ago, and it’s fucking up my life,” I snapped. “I just need to ask her questions, Eric.”

“How badly?”

“What does he mean?” Rain mouthed.

“Money,” Ezra whispered.

“How much do you want?” I asked.

“Fifty grand should do,” he said. “Eighty if you want to ‘ask her questions’ here.”

“Eighty it is.” I grabbed a pen and paper from the corner of the desk. “Are you stateside?”

“My house in Italy, at the moment,” he said. “How long will it take you to get here?”

“Soonest I can get on a plane. What’s the address?”

He gave it to me, and I jotted it down.

“Just hurry up, alright? I have my daughter in the house.”

“Where do you have Nancy?”

“Root cellar in the back,” he said. “She can still hear her though. It’s scaring her.”

“Might not be a bad idea to get a hotel then.” I folded the slip of paper and slid it into my jeans pocket. “We’ll be on our way soon.”

“As long as you’ve got the check.”

I rolled my eyes. “Eventually, one of you is gonna get us all charged with money laundering.”

He laughed. “My accountant will find a place for it.”

I hoped mine could.

Clicking the end call button, I looked between Rain, Ezra, and Graham. “Anyone wanna join me for a trip to Italy?”

“Wait, hold on,” Rain said. “You’re gonna give this guy almost a hundred thousand dollars to let you question a woman?”

“To let me question his hostage.” I pulled off my jacket and laid it over the back of the armchair. “I put out the word that I was looking for her, so whoever saw her saw a payout.”

She stared at me in disbelief for a moment. “This is just how it works for rich people. You can just pay for anything.”

“Just about,” I said. “Are you coming?”

“Not missing out on Italy.” She turned and headed to the stairs. “Let me get a bag together.”

“You’ll need me to check her mind.” Graham started off with Rain. “Give me ten minutes to call my clients. I have a few appointments scheduled.”

“You can use Rain’s cell on the way.”

“Nah, they’re odd about who they’ll answer for.” He jogged up the steps, calling behind him.
